Dexter Levin was a security guard for his odious step-father's terrible department store. He preferred to keep his nose in a book, but he is forced to take notice when a woman is kidnapped through a dressing room mirror. Dexter decides to finally confront his problems, and plunges through to try and save her. On the other side, he is faced with gods and monsters. He does not meet the tide alone, as his reflection Dex is there to help. Together they fight against the insane gods of the land Aethero. Not only to save the lives of the women they love, but also to face down the gods that would control the world through perception.

This first novel will delight fans of myth-punk and aficionados of Neil Gaiman, in particular. It's a portal fantasy novel in which Dexter, a security guard at his step-father's clothing store, falls through the looking glass into a fairy tale world of mythic conflicts.

I particularly liked the use of mirrors and reflections. Dexter meets his mirror self, Dex, who is strong and confident in all the ways that Dexter feels himself to be weak and uncertain. This concept of mirror-selves lies at the heart of this novel and allows Hewitt to explore the nature of his characters with great subtlety.

The conflict of the Mirrorman and Mother is one of concepts clashing, perhaps the echo of the struggle through adolescence. In this sense, I get the feeling that this novel has more to offer young adult readers than those of us for whom these self-definitional inner conflicts lie far behind.

Also worth mentioning are the excellent inter-chapter illustrations by Tim Denee. I'd not seen this before on a Kindle book and they really add to the atmosphere, as well as being very fine illustrations in their own right. I can't praise these highly enough!

It has a few first-timer problems, notably with pacing. It's a bit long, and there's probably just too much "stuff" in there. I suspect Hewitt has yet developed the flinty attitude necessary to kill his darlings, and the novel could have benefitted from a fairly ruthless edit and some re-structuring. In particular, the characters of Story and Song that turn up take up a lot of space for little reward, and the climax, when it comes, rattles through a bit quickly given all the time we've spent leading up to it.

All that aside this is an exciting story set in a charming fantasy world with moments of real excitement and fantastical frisson.

A Reflection of Glass Jeffrey Hewitt Tim Denee 9781495963018 Books Reviews

Just finished Mr. Hewitt's first book, Reflection of Glass. It was defiantly a first novel, but very entertaining! Rumor has it, the author just finished his draft for his second novel. I hope more people get the opportunity to enjoy this new author and his work. I would recommend Reflection of Glass to anyone that enjoyed Harry Potter, Narnia, Lord of the Rings, etc.
This Author's first book was an interesting foray in what I percieve to be a much bigger world. While the book suffers from some of the common mistakes of first authors (pacing problems, not enough development of some characters) the book was still quite enjoyable.

The world the story takes place in, Aethero, is a world that seems to be just blossoming in the book, and if the author continues writing in the world I think that he will have a world that rivals Terry Pratchett's Discworld in originality and character.

The lore of the world was one of the things that drew me into the story, but memorable characters, like Theodore Rooseveldt Terrapin, are what kept me reading. It is a quick (I read it in a night) and enjoyable read and I highly reccomend it, especially for those that like interesting and quirky fantasy worlds.
