Sign Changes is a novel about ideas and the ways they have changed us. It is about the way you came to understand the very words you are reading now. About the origins of symbol use. Kpol and his tribe struggle to survive an ice age 100,000 years ago and adapt to new ways. In 16th century England, a young boy leaves the countryside to learn to read and print books. In the near-present computer age, a man and woman prepare for the bombs they fear will fall. And in the distant future, a new form of life comes into existence. What connects them all?

When I was a child, my father read to me each night. I sat mesmerized looking at those marks in my book wondering how he knew what they said.. Years later when I started school, I came home one day and took my father's newspaper and circled "the" "and" "to" each time they appeared on the front page. When asked "Why ?" I told him "I can read !" I now knew those marks meant something. Later that year I learned to "write" and could communicate in ways other than speech. It was liberating !.

The first two time periods in this book covered how important the use of symbols to our development as PEOPLE . The second two periods brought us to contemporary time and the future. The reader jumps from time to time and we see how important symbols are and how we are interconnected by those symbols. The future covers where we might be going because of these symbols exist.

We tend to think of time as a long line going from point A to point B .It really is more of a cycle that repeats itself. This story connects these cycles for us. Looking back at prehistoric man shows what trailblazers they were. Then the invention of the printing press and the computer came into being . These steps were all big steps that got us to today and will project mankind into the future.

After you finish this book, follow it into the sequel that is now available.

At first, I felt the story was a bit disjointed, jumping between four different storylines. But as I read, it began to nerant take a life of its own, drawing me into each world. Though the threads tying the four stories together are not visible until halfway through, it is an intriguing story and well worth reading.
I rather enjoyed this book which was an interesting blend of both historical and science fiction! Book continuously cycles thru 4 different time periods over and over relating the ongoing story of that moment (100,000 years ago, 1500s London, present day apocalypse, and future of first-time travel to distant stars). Takes a little getting used to the rhythm, but stories and characters were becoming so engaging that I found I was almost hurrying thru each period so I could see what happened next at that moment in time. Lost me a little at about the 75% mark (present day apocalypse) when the the man was relating his personal thoughts to his fiance and book is in need of a sequel but I'd definitely be interested in getting the follow-up. Very good read!
A fun read with a science background. This shows some of the stages mankind have been/are going/will so through in their mental development in communication. The stories are fun and readable. It gave me some new thoughts to ponder.
four separate stories from prehistoric times to a future of space travel. The unifying theme is symbol manipulation. The way gestures, words, pictures and numbers represent aspects of reality, and the way using them has changed humanity. Of course the timeline is greatly condensed but an interesting narrative emerges that ties it all together.
I loved the story, even as it jumped forth and back between a few different people's stories; people living in significantly different periods of time. I also quite liked the (only somewhat subtle) lecture woven throughout the narrative about how symbols developed in human thought and how our use of them-- including the ones we know as "words"--have shaped, and continue to shape our thoughts and actions today.
All in all, a very interesting and satisfying read.
Have to admit it took me a couple of chapters to get into this book - until I finally caught the plot. Once there though, I couldn't put it down and was sad when it ended. This is perhaps the shortest, but most complete, account of the evolution of that which makes us human. Each epoch is masterfully written - could be a great book in and of itself. When finally linked, those epochs create a sense of time and progress which is awesome. Great job, Mr. Hopkins.
The immediate and simple response this is an amazing book, one of the best, important in idea and relevance.

Sign Changes transcends fiction. On the surface it's a combination of Science Fiction and Historical Fiction, and any reader of those genres will be pleased. More than pleased! But, below the surface, at the heart of these exceptional tales & characters, is so much more.

Great thinkers throughout history have devoted their lives to the study of our world. Aristotle. Plato. Ben Franklin. Locke. I don't say this lightly; but these are the people I am reminded of in this work. Their keen ability to discern, their scope and reach.

Hopkins takes us on a journey unlike any other; it's obvious that he has devoted time to being a student of humanity. We see the full spectrum of mankind, a landscape of action, thought, and evolution. Yet, always in a manner understandable to the reader. What we have is an explanation for the advances of gesture, thought, words, symbolism, and the spread of knowledge in the middle ages ... what made it all possible.

It's the way things really could have happened distant past, recent past, and present. In regards to the future element ... it's what still might happen.

Written in the terse, economical prose reminiscent of Hemingway, the journey is one that entertains, one of the reasons we read. But this one takes that next step or two and it makes you think. It makes you stop and think about the amazing journey of our ancestors, and reminds us that there is still more to come. It's about the here and now and how we got here.

One of the finest novels I've read. Period.

I truly felt inspired, enlightened. I avoided the particulars of the story -- you can find those in the book description. Instead I hoped to portray how it made me feel. If you give it a chance, you'll love it.
